Criminal Records Database Available To Public

Through its Internet Website, Rapsheets.com provides instant criminal records searches for an average $3 per name - an alternative to more expensive, time-consuming courthouse searches that have long been the only means for checking a person's criminal record. Registered users can search contents on more than 37 million persons from 27 states and numerous metropolitan areas of the country.

The company notes a caveat that the Rapsheets.com search service does not always substitute for an in-person courthouse search of criminal records.

Rapsheets.com is owned and operated by The Daily News Publishing Co. of Memphis, Tennessee, which has been the city's newspaper of record for more than 100 years, beginning in 1886 as 'The Daily Abstract of Transfers'.

Rapsheets.com's databases contain public records from court and prison systems, generally dating from 1990. The company updates almost every jurisdiction's records monthly. All of the records in rapsheets.com's databases are housed in its own data center. Additionally, some records are actually provided by direct real-time connection to state and court computers.

Search results from the statewide databases, as an example, include name, date of birth (DOB), race, sex, offense, disposition, county, and case number.

Using Rapsheets.com is relatively easy: (1) Logon to Rapsheets.com; (2) Register online through a secure server using a major credit card; (3) Choose a specific jurisdiction; (4) Type and individual's name and date of birth (optional); (5) Select from name matches; and (6) View the individual's record.

In 1997, Rapsheets.com's parent company began compiling public records from state criminal justice agencies, courts, and other government sources around the U.S. and delivering instant search results. In January 2001, the company separated its criminal records from its main Website (http://www.memphisdailynews.com) and launched Rapsheets.com, now a subsidiary of The Daily News Publishing Co., Inc.

Rapsheets.com is a monthly subscription service at $14.95 per month plus a charge of $3 per name per jurisdiction (statewide and county-level searches). Other prices are Instant Name Lookup ($1); Instant Address Lookup ($2); and Instant SSN (Social Security Number) Verification ($2).
